Maternity & Delivery Guide A Guide for International Patients
This guide summarizes the obstetric (maternity/delivery) services, costs, and procedures at Shiseikai Daini Hospital, based on information published on the hospital’s official website. It is intended to help international patients understand what to expect. For the most current details, or if anything is unclear, please contact the Obstetrics Outpatient Department directly.
|
⚠️ Important: Please Bring a Japanese-Speaking Interpreter This hospital welcomes international patients, but not all medical and administrative staff speak English (or other languages). If you are not confident communicating in Japanese, please bring your partner, a friend, or another person who speaks Japanese with you to act as an interpreter — ideally at every check-up, and especially at your first visit, your delivery reservation, and the day of delivery. This will help ensure your medical history, symptoms, and the hospital’s instructions are clearly and accurately understood by both sides. |

1. Our Obstetric Care
During this important time before your baby is born, our doctors, midwives, and nurses work as one team with you and your partner. A range of options is available throughout pregnancy, delivery, and the postpartum period — please let us know your preferences.
- Scheduled (induced) delivery — available according to the mother’s condition and preference.
- Painless (epidural) delivery — performed by our anesthesiology specialists; this is always a scheduled delivery.
- Partner-attended delivery — available for partners who wish to be present; a health check and mask-wearing are required.
- Midwife consultations — individualized advice on pregnancy, birth, and childcare, including antenatal classes and breastfeeding consultations.
- Postpartum care admission — available as a self-pay stay or, for residents of Setagaya, Komae, or Chofu, as a publicly subsidized stay; an extension of your delivery hospitalization may also be arranged on request.
- “Papa & Mama Plan” — after delivery, couples can stay together with their baby in a special room.
2. Delivery Costs
Normal (Vaginal) Delivery
|
Delivery Type |
Cost |
|
Normal vaginal delivery (approx. 5-day hospital stay) |
From ¥665,000 (includes the delivery reservation deposit and the hospitalization deposit; actual length of stay may vary depending on the condition of mother and baby) |
|
Painless (epidural) delivery fee |
¥130,000 (Anesthesiology consultation fee charged separately. This is a scheduled/induced delivery, so the hospital stay is approximately 7 days.) |
|
Cesarean section (approx. 9-day hospital stay) |
Covered by health insurance; the amount you pay depends on your income-based co-payment limit certificate. Cost differs between a planned and an emergency cesarean. Please ask the admissions desk for details. |
|
Delivery reservation deposit |
¥50,000 (paid when you enroll in the Maternity Medical Care Compensation System) |
|
Hospitalization deposit |
¥150,000 |
Fees for a second or subsequent delivery at this hospital are reduced by ¥20,000.
Partner attendance at the delivery costs ¥2,200 (partner only).
Patients enrolled in Japanese health insurance (employee or national health insurance) receive a lump-sum childbirth allowance of ¥500,000, which can be applied directly to hospital charges through the direct payment system.
The normal newborn-care fee (¥10,000/day after birth) is not included in the delivery fee above; this daily fee does not apply if the baby requires hospitalization for a medical reason.
Residents of Setagaya-ku, Chofu-shi, and Komae-shi may be eligible for public subsidies for postpartum care — please ask the Obstetrics outpatient desk for details.
Length of hospital stay may change depending on the condition of mother and baby.

NIPT (Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing)
NIPT analyzes fetal-derived DNA in the mother’s blood to assess the likelihood of three chromosomal conditions (Trisomy 21/Down syndrome, Trisomy 18, and Trisomy 13). About 10-20 mL of blood is drawn, and results are available in approximately 1-2 weeks. Pre-test genetic counseling is required, and both partners (or the patient with a support person) are asked to attend the counseling session together.
- Eligibility: 10 weeks to under 15 weeks of pregnancy.
- Fee: Base fee ¥100,000 (tax included, includes result explanation) + pre-test genetic counseling ¥5,000 + ultrasound on the day, if performed, ¥2,000. A first-visit fee of ¥4,000 and a follow-up fee of ¥2,000 also apply.
- Counseling days: Monday-Wednesday, 9:00-15:00, by advance reservation. NIPT can be performed the same day as counseling if you wish.
Shiseikai Daini Hospital is an affiliated NIPT testing facility, working in cooperation with Tokyo Women’s Medical University Hospital as the core testing center.

Rooms & Facilities
This historic hospital fully renovated its inpatient wards in 2020. Wherever possible, delivery patients are given a private room, and rooming-in with your baby is standard.
Amenities
A celebratory meal (your choice of meat or fish; please let staff know about any allergies) is served to mark the birth, and a 3pm snack and 8pm light meal are available between feedings.
Provided items: slippers, delivery gown, 1 postpartum recovery underwear, 1 nursing bra, breast pads, diapers/wipes, sanitary pads (S/M/L), toothbrush and cup set, hairbrush, tissues, umbilical cord box, mini bottles of shampoo/conditioner/body soap.
Rental items: sleepwear and towel set, hair dryer, baby clothing during your stay, and a nursing pillow. Full details are provided in the Maternity Handbook and at the parenting class.
Newborn Photography Service
A photographer who previously worked as a nurse in this Obstetrics department offers newborn portrait sessions.

- Home visit plan (after discharge): 20 photos ¥25,000 (tax incl.) / 30 photos ¥30,000 (tax incl.), plus a separate travel fee
Please let Obstetrics staff know by 35 weeks if you would like to book a session. Requests after 35 weeks may still be accepted, but an in-hospital session cannot always be guaranteed due to scheduling.
7. After Giving Birth — Postpartum Support
Since 2022, this hospital has offered postpartum care. Midwives are on-site 24 hours a day to answer questions about breastfeeding, milk intake and your baby’s weight, skin care, and other childcare topics, and to help with bathing and rest. If timing allows, a pediatric consultation can also be arranged during your stay.
Who postpartum care is for
Mainly for mothers and babies under 4 months old who are not yet rolling over.
Publicly subsidized postpartum care
This hospital accepts subsidized short-stay postpartum care for residents of Setagaya-ku, Komae-shi, and Chofu-shi.
- Setagaya-ku: register first, then apply through your local Child and Family Support Center; check the ward website for details on using postpartum care subsidy coupons.
- Komae-shi / Chofu-shi: register with your city first, then apply directly to this hospital.
Reservations for Komae-shi/Chofu-shi postpartum care are accepted by phone on weekdays, 13:00-16:00 (not available outside these hours or on public holidays).
Pediatric Care & Vaccinations
This hospital’s pediatricians are involved in your baby’s care from the time of hospitalization, and continue to be available after discharge for check-ups, vaccinations, and any health concerns.
8. Other Important Information
Infection control
Please cooperate with mask-wearing and hand sanitizing inside the hospital. If you are a regular obstetric patient here and develop a fever, sore throat, or other symptoms suggestive of COVID-19, you will be seen by the Internal Medicine department; if you test positive, this hospital will take full responsibility for your care.
Partner attendance at delivery
Details are explained at your prenatal check-ups.
The fee for partner attendance at delivery is ¥2,200 (partner only).
Visiting
Details are explained at your prenatal check-ups. Visiting is currently permitted.
Sibling Visits (for newborn siblings after delivery)
Visits from a new baby’s brothers and sisters are welcome, with no age limit. Please be sure to sign in at the Obstetrics ward nurse station before your visit.
- Children with a fever, cough, sneezing, runny nose, sore throat, diarrhea, or vomiting on the day of the visit should not visit. If a child has had any of these symptoms within the past week, please consult the nursing staff first.
- Children old enough to wear a mask comfortably (around age 2 and up) are asked to wear one during the visit.
- Please refrain from visiting if influenza or gastroenteritis is going around at your child’s school or nursery/kindergarten and attendance restrictions are in place there.
- Parents should keep a close eye on their child at all times during the visit.
- Please do not eat during the visit, as this is a potential source of infection (drinking water is fine).
- Visits must take place in the patient’s room only; please do not visit in the day room.
- Visits may be suspended during outbreaks of influenza, measles, or other infectious diseases.
Newborns have immature defenses against infection, and mothers after delivery also have reduced strength and immunity, so this policy exists to protect them — thank you for your understanding and cooperation. If anyone in the family develops symptoms of illness after visiting, please be sure to contact the ward.
